Celebrating Mrs. Jasmyne Portee-Haywood, Class of 2013
During AUSL’s Annual Benefit Dinner, Dewey School of Excellence Principal Charlene Reynolds presented first grade teacher Jasmyne Portee-Haywood with AUSL’s inaugural Teacher of Excellence Award.
A CTR alumna, mentor teacher, and leader on Dewey’s Instructional Leadership Team, Mrs. Portee-Haywood brings over a decade of teaching experience and boundless joy to her first grade classroom. From daily affirmations in the mirror to using Mickey Mouse ears as a classroom tool, she creates a positive, student-centered environment where every child feels seen and celebrated.
A few of Mrs. Portee-Haywood’s former students shared special messages about their fondest memories of being in her class:
“She has always been a very inspiring role model to me. From her teaching to her amazing outfits, imagination, and care for her students, she will always be one of the key members in making sure her students succeed and become better than they are.” – Asuneraye Wooten
“You’ve taught us everything you wanted to teach us and showed us that we are ourselves to the core. You made everyday in class feel like a dream and you always made the day feel brighter by how cheerful you are.” – Markell Williams
“I will never forget all of the fun activities you included in your class to enhance learning. I especially loved how you always related the lessons to real life examples that allowed the material to make sense to students.” – Nyla Harris
“Mrs. Haywood has a way of making you feel safe, seen, and important. Her classroom was a place to dream, learn, grow, and believe in yourself. She didn’t just teach us the basics–she inspired us by the way she spoke, listened, and smiled. It all made a difference.” – Talia Roper
Mrs. Portee-Haywood’s dedication to her students and commitment to exceptional teaching make her a true embodiment of AUSL’s values and an outstanding inaugural Teacher of Excellence Award recipient—setting the standard for years to come.
