Sabrina Akbar of Chicago Academy High School is headed to college as a Posse Chicago Scholar. She will be attending Connecticut College in New London, CT and is looking forward to the plethora of interesting areas of study and the beautiful arboretum and campus at her college. Sabrina is pursuing a major in environmental studies, something she has enjoyed since taking the class in high school. The teacher for it, Mr.Ishaq, was her favorite even though he was only a temporary teacher. Mr. Ishaq always made class a welcoming and safe environment and also was a great reminder to Sabrina that she should always follow her dreams.

Sabrina was, in part, motivated to work hard for her future education by a teacher for another class, who taught her an important lesson.

It is okay to not know all the answers to our future, but it is not okay to refuse to seek answers through questions, research, and opportunities.

Her favorite high school memory is a humorous one. In a color run coordinated by the school to celebrate Holi, the colorful Indian holiday, Sabrina got green powder in her hair that remained after she was meant to return to her Biology class afterwards. With the green falling down into her face, her teacher told her she looked like a “baby Hulk”. While this memory is a funny one, she also cherishes it for the celebration making her feel very connected to her school community.

As Sabrina makes her big move to the east coast, she wants to remind students that most opportunities begin outside of their comfort zones. She felt similarly after enrolling in Connecticut College despite her original plan to not leave the midwest.

It is because of the willingness to try something completely different that wondrous new doors of adventures will open up.
